Autism Discussion Empty Autism Discussion

Post  MidnightDragoon Thu May 17, 2012 12:51 pm

This thread is to, basically, discuss various things that involve Autism and its spectrum cousins (like Asperger's Syndrome and PDD-NOS). I thought about creating this thread a long while ago, but I was busy doing school projects and couldn't get this thing posted.
However, it should be noted that this isn't really a place to argue about what causes Autism or make a giant rant about how misunderstood those whom are autistic are. This thread, in a way, could act like a "portal" into the world of autistic people.
With that said, I do actually have Asperger's (was officially diagnosed when I was 7), and I very rarely use it as an excuse for anything (if I am annoyed by something, or had a stressful day, my comments about my nature would slip out every once in a while). Now, before anyone decides to begin a flame war about me representing everyone on the spectrum, keep in mind that I only represent myself and no one else that is autistic. Okay, mini-rant over, let the discussions begin.

I think that you'd be surprised at just how many people fit into the autism spectrum.
I was also diagnosed with Aspergers, although I seem to have a mild case.
I once attended a lunch for people with the condition, and I seemed to be the highest functioning there, which is not to say that the others were not functioning. Just that I seemed to be the least affected and most able to perceive facial expressions and implied comments.
Those are things that can pose a challenge to some aspergians.

And my Aunt works at PCDI, which is a well respected school for autistic children and adults, in Princeton NJ. So that's my experience so far.

I've learned how to understand various figures of speech and sarcastic remarks (although there are some rare moments that still get me, not to mention me falling for some of my father's old tricks -__-). I know of at least two other people within my small town community that have some form of autism, and one of them just happens to be a local hair stylist that has done my hair numerous of times (and I didn't even realize it until she mentioned it to me when she was doing my hair for prom 0_o). Plus there was this one teacher at my school who had two cousins who were aspergians as well.
Ironically enough, I usually don't like being disrupted while I'm doing something, but I don't mind any of the constant travelling my family tends to do.
Wait a second, SiLK, I didn't realize that you were also an Aspergian. Even though I've ran into a few other Autistic folk in the past, it usually is almost impossible for me to notice that they were autistic unless someone directly told me.

I guess I fit in this topic too...for I have Asperger's Syndrome ... I guess that's why I still like anime and can still use my imagination. Lol. I play with my cousins and I swear when I do I turn back into a little kid but when I leave I can get back to reality and such... ^^; am I making sense...?

Yep, you are, Miyu.
I tend to have a very odd tendency to be incredibly vocal while playing games (even to the point of talking to the characters) although I usually am incredibly quiet whenever I'm out and about (though I do try to talk to people, but I go way over their heads with the stuff I talk about). It gets very ironic in the sence that I am often nervous and somewhat fearful of other people in real life but I often go chatterbox and show loads of energy whike interacting with characters in-game. Then again, I am more relaxed in the latter situation and often wind up adding in various tics without noticing, unlike the former where I begin to really worry about the stigma and negativity that is sometimes directed at me.

I have memtioned my autisum in the past. My Brothers as well.

My Brother has it worse, though. He has Asperger's Syndrome, Combined with our Bad past with our father & Dad's influance & words, His Low self esteem & His pride & lack of Empathy. He is a very angry & unhappy individual. He only sees the downside of life, feels is autisum is a weakness & dosen't reveal it to anyone, feeling everyone will behave "fake" with him.

I also understand People with Asperger's are focused more on the Logical side of Thinking than the creative side of it.

Having only My Brother as My example to the world of Asperger's. I pray that not everyone with it is not unhappy or angry all the time. Sad

I see, DR.
I, myself, have incredibly rare moments where I do get angry, even though I do have issues with my father (my gamer side and tics and my father's impatient, extreme-hatred-of-gaming nature does tend to cause some altercations here and there). Although most situations that are unfamiliar to me or have tons of negativity floating around can cause me to become very anxious, I rarely get upset to much extremes (I often revert to gaming or listening to music to try to avert it). Usually I tend to be incredibly tired and slightly irritable, but that's mainly from being subjected to many close-encounters with acute sensory overload (there was only one time that I remember where it got really bad, but I'll refrain from going into detail here). Although, if any person that I don't know touches me, anyone pokes me, or if they try to touch my face, then I would feel slightly uncomfortable (and, in the case of the latter two, occasionally threatened) since I did have some pretty bad experiences in my past (although I probably don't remember most of them because of either me going into a state of shutdown or having a stress-induced ceasure (haven't had one in about 8 years, and I would like to keep it that way), so I would only know from second-hand accounts of the events).
Weirdly enough, I tend to lean more towards creative thinking than logic on many occasions (though that logic does sometimes hep when playing games that make use of it a whole bunch). I'm guessing that it is because of my preference of art, music, and gaming, however.
