Voice Acting Tips
This is something I've been wanting to ask for awhile now. So, We all know that CornSilk is a great voice actress (If she wasn't, the show wouldn't be quite as interesting as it is), so as an ameteur voice actress, I was wondering if I could get some tips on how to develope some better 'voices' for future productions I hope to be able to participate in.
So, care to share some pearls of wisdom? Anyone can post ideas, or even interesting dubbing projects they've seen floating around the web. Basically, anything voice acting related topics are free to be discussed here.

Re: Voice Acting Tips
I've made a few podcasts but never found the time to put them up. I don't even know where to put them up...
Any ideas anyone?

Re: Voice Acting Tips
That's quite a compliment, Sarist! Thank you.
Well, it's mainly just controlling your breathing and playing with pitches and funny sounds until you find one you like.
The best advice I can offer for starters is to never eat right before you want to use your voice.
I like to record myself and just be completely random sometimes when I'm alone. Just have fun then listen to the results to find out what you sound like.
I'm still evolving as a voice actress, but that's what I usually do.

Re: Voice Acting Tips
Yeah, I've been trying to play around with different voices, but it seems like every time I try a voice it still sounds like me. I even recorded two five minute conversations between me and one of my characters just so I had a comparison to see how the voice I tried sounded compared to my true voice. I guess I just need to practice more, I just get no alone time.
Re: Voice Acting Tips
Try really exaggerating your voices, like do one really high pitched squeak, and one really deep growling voice. Contrasts like that might help.
Re: Voice Acting Tips
All right, I'll try it!
By the way, how many dubbing projects have you been part of? I know that you've been in a few.

Re: Voice Acting Tips
Oh dear, that's hard to answer! XD
I was in a small computer game called Dubious Fudge, and quite a few videos made by Roger Van der Weide (Rogerregorroger on DA) and I am a regular cast member in Roger's IMP series. I've also been in a Sims based series that I unfortunately had to quit when the director was unable to respect her actors. And quite a few fandubbings of animes like Mermaid Melody.
I was also in a Sailor Moon radio play before the project went under, and I've played roles for several other internet friends who needed some lines.

Wow, that's a lot! Right now, I'm signed up to help out with Jester's flash project FFN as a voice actor, but I'm hoping I could join in on more projects if I become a better VA.As it stands, I still suck horribly. XD

Please stay on topic, the socks my friend makes that I advertised for him have nothing to do with Sarist's voice acting questions.
If you want to ask me an unrelated question, you can send a private message on this forum.

Re: Voice Acting Tips
(Oops! sorry I trying to get used to that ) I think you are a great actor & singer. The best voice actor on youtube in my opinion. I wish my youtube account was working so you could hear my impressions, but anyway I think your show was a great idea. I like the voices you make for Reala and the others. It must be hard to make the voice for Jackle it's so loud. (Feel free to tell me if I spelled some names wrong)

Please stop posting off topic, this is Sarist's topic about voice acting, it's not about Silk...

Re: Voice Acting Tips
You know, a lot of those abandoned shows in the Offshoots section could have been saved if more people would read this thread...
The number one problem that I have with those shows is that every character sounds alike. I can't tell who's talking!
Silk mentioned exaggerated contrasts. Squeaky and growling voices... huh, what does a growling voice sound like?
Anyway, I wish that more character show creators would take that advice and work on contrasting voices. I'd be able to enjoy their shows a lot more if they did...

When me and Whirlwynd meet, she says she can tell that my voice sound distinct when it comes to characters, though she also says that I have a lisp, so I've been looking for ways to solve this. Suggestions?

Re: Voice Acting Tips
Without having heard you, I can't really suggest much.
I don't always speak as clearly as I should, and I've been told it's because I speak too quickly. Maybe focus on slowing down and pronouncing the letters more?
Though if anyone ever wants a cameo in TRS, you're all welcome to record yourselves and send it to me at cornsilkdreamer@gmail.com
I'll make it a phone conversation or video chat.
